5 Ideas to Relieve Chronic Back Pain

08/01/2022

Spirituality and Health recently posted this article about chronic back pain.  In the article the author talks about 5 steps to relieve chronic back pain.

Let's break these down from an energetic perspective.

In this article the author offers these 5 steps which he has found highly effective in helping people manage pain without surgery:

  • Learn about chronic back pain. Chronic pain is a complex neurological problem heightened by elevated levels of stress chemicals. Mental and physical pain is processed in a similar manner.  However, mental pain has a greater impact on your life because you can’t escape from it. Many physical symptoms are created by the sustained alterations of your body’s chemistry. Ask yourself, is your doctor operating on your pain or on your anxiety?   From a TCM Perspective, all dis-ease and disfunction in the body originates from either a Jing (Body, Form), Chi (Energy, or lack of) and Shen (Consciousness, emotions, etc) perspective or a combination of them all. When one or more of these are out of balance (Yin/Yang Balance), the body can't effectively heal any part of the problem. Of course there are always those situations where an accident happens or something out of your control, BUT in order to heal from that event, there needs to be a way to move the energy to the affected area of the body.  In the case of an accident the person will usually have problems not only with the physical body, but also the emotional body so healing must come from both perspectives.
  • Practice expressive writing. A daily practice of expressive writing is the foundation for the rest of the process. There are almost 1000 research papers that document its effectiveness.  Here is a link to one of my free resources.   It's is about breathing, but it also offers ways for you to incorporate Affirmations and Journal prompts to write down what you are feeling, noticing, etc.   Awareness outside of the pain is needed in order to allow healing to happen.   When the body or emotions aren't healing there is often the emotions of worry (Earth Element), Fear (Water Element), Grief (Metal Element) and/or Anger (Wood Element) that need attention and nurturing to clear. Healing Sounds and a variety of Qigong movements can help with this process.
  • Meditate. Drawing attention to a physical sensation connects you with the present moment. This shifts your attention off of your pain circuits and helps calm your system.  I believe this one should be at the top of the list. Meditation is a game changer when it comes to healing. The shift of your attention "off of your pain circuits" is a key step to healing.  Calming the nervous system and allowing healing energy to move is critical to this healing process.  If you can't sit comfortably, meditation can be done lying down.  I would also offer to assist you with moving meditation which can help move energy through the body, open up the meridian circuits and help shift your mind into a meditative state while supporting you physically. There are many different movements, so don't give up. I am available to help.
  • Sleep. This is the cornerstone of solving your pain; real changes won’t occur without adequate sleep.  Restorative sleep is critical to good health on any level, but when you're experiencing pain in the body, sleep is often the first thing to go.  There are many ways in Qigong to help bring about restorative sleep.  We can also look at the Chinese Medicine Clock to see what, besides pain, might be causing you to wake up at certain hours of the night.  Most of the restorative process in the body occur while you should be sleeping so don't discount this important healing area. Need help? Let me know.

Don’t share your pain. Your brain will develop wherever you place your attention.  Don’t discuss your back pain with others, especially those who are close to you. Talking about your problems reinforces these unpleasant circuits.  In Energy Work we always say "where the mind goes, the energy flows".  This is so true and becomes even more important when you are trying to heal.  It is common and so easy to focus on the pain, the situation, the worry, fear, anger, grief....all of the emotions that tend to take over during a health episode.   Qigong offers many ways to shift your awareness away from the pain, dis-ease, trauma, even if it's just for short periods of time to begin with.  As healing has a chance to occur, the short periods of time will become longer and longer. When you can see yourself as "Perfect, Whole, and Complete" the energy will go to exactly where it is needed and do it's magical work.

The great thing about this is there are no pills required and when you learn to use the healing energy tools it is virtually free.  In closing, I would like to encourage you to consider adding these modalities to your medical toolbox. This may not work for everyone, but I also read all the time about amazing healings to bodies, minds and spirits. If you have ever followed the work of Joe Dispenza you have likely heard about his story and how he healed his broken back through mindfulness, meditation and the power of healing energy.  There are many stories similar to his. There is no reason it can't work for you or me.
